Elvis insisted on recording this classically based love song for the soundtrack of the first of his Hawaiian Trilogy of films. 'Can't Help Falling in Love' was written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss; based on the melody of 'Plaisir d'Amour'. Though neither the producers nor his associates liked the song; Elvis was determined to record it. Recorded at Radio Recorders in Hollywood over three days before the filming of 'Blue Hawaii', the soundtrack included Hawaiian traditional music. Producer Hal B. Wallis initially put the film together as a more serious vehicle for Presley, showing the effects of being in the military; but it set the stage for a decade of romantic musicals set in exotic locations. Hal Kanter's screenplay was nominated by the Writers Guild of America for Best Written American Musical. 'Can't Help Falling in Love' peaked at number two on the US pop chart; and went to number one on the Easy Listening chart for six weeks and the UK pop chart for four weeks. The soundtrack of 'Blue Hawaii' spent twenty consecutive weeks (a record that stood for fifteen years) at the top of the US album chart, becoming the second biggest album of the decade, behind 'West Side Story', and the biggest charting album of Presley's career. The soundtrack album was also nominated for a Grammy. Presley's soundtracks sold so much better than his regular studio albums that he spent the next decade recording sixteen soundtracks and only six albums.
Is Elvis singing to the grandmother or the grandaughter?
Rock-A-Hula Baby' was the b-side for the single. It peaked at number twenty-three.
Wise men say only fools rush in
But I can't help falling in love with you
Shall I stay
Would it be a sin
If I can't help falling in love with you
Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you
Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you
For I can't help falling in love with you
Elvis performed this version for his 1968 television special.
This rendition is from 'Aloha from Hawaii' which was broadcast live via satellite on January 14, 1973. It is the most watched broadcast by an individual entertainer in television history.
'Plaisir d'amour' translates to "the pleasure of love". It is a classical love song by French composer Jean Paul Égide Martini. The lyric is from a poem by Jean de Florian.
