Joey Dee and the Starliters had their biggest success with this spinoff of 'The Twist' that replaced it at number one. Joey Dee and Henry Glover named 'Peppermint Twist' for the exclusive Peppermint Club in New York City where the band became a sensation playing for celebrities as the Twist dance craze hit the upper crust, driving Chubbie Checker's song back to the top of the charts two years after it started it all. It was 'Peppermint Twist' that knocked 'The Twist' off of the top in January of 1962, after the Starliters appeared in the movie 'Hey, Let's Twist', which cashed in on the craze and was loosely based on the story of the Peppermint Lounge. 'Peppermint Twist' sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
