Lady Gaga showed her hand and doubled down with this danceably decadent double entendre and had a monster payout. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta cut her teeth studying musical theater before performing in Manhattan clubs with the Stefani Germanotta Band. After meeting producer Rob Fusari, she developed the Lady Gaga stage name and began preforming with performance artist Lady Starlight as "Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue", eventually being invited to perform at the Lollapalooza music festival. Record exec Vincent Herbert signed her to Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. While interning at Famous Music Publishing, it was bought by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, with whom Gaga made a publishing deal and began writing songs for artists like Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block, Fergie, and The Pussycat Dolls. Akon was impressed with her voice and convinced Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman and CEO Jimmy Iovine to sign her to his own label Kon Live in a joint deal with Interscope. She also joined Martin Kierszenbaum's Interscope imprint Cherrytree Records. When it came time to record her debut album, she collaborated with Moroccan producer RedOne and the sparks flew. RedOne remembers: "It happens so quick, we know each other, we're good musically," he said. "We're not overthinking. We just do what we feel right. Before you know it the song is pretty much done. I'm not saying that is the way it should be, but in this case that's what happened -- we wrote 'Just Dance' in one hour. Done. 'Poker Face'? One hour. It just happened. Magic."
Her first single 'Just Dance' went to number one around the world as her album 'The Fame' was released on the heavily hyphenated Streamline-Kon Live-Cherrytree-Interscope. It was the follow-up that secured her success. 'Poker Face' became one of the biggest hits of all time, going to thirty-five in South Korea; twenty-one in Japan; two in Israel, Italy, and Spain; and topping charts in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the US. The song has sold over thirteen million copies and was nominated for Grammys for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. It won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording. The "Mum-mum-mum-ma" hook is sampled from Boney M's 1977 hit 'Ma Baker'.
Lady Gaga reveals: "The song speaks in reference to the poker game, 'Texas Hold Em.' So I said, 'I wanna hold him like they do in Texas, please.' So its basically saying like, I wanna hold that guy - I wanna be close to him ... I like boys that look like girls. All my boyfriends look like Nikki Sixx. Amazing. But something I don't really talk about is if you listen to the chorus I say: 'He's got me like nobody' then 'She's got me like nobody'. It's got an undertone of confusion about love and sex ... It's about a lot of different things. I gamble; but I've also dated a lot of guys who are really into sex and booze and gambling; so I wanted to write a record that my boyfriends would like too...This record is about how I used to fantasize about women when I was with my boyfriend."
