The triumvirate of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach clicked with classic chemistry in a one time only dream team session to create the bluesy bop brilliance of this landmark jazz coadjuvancy. 'Money Jungle' was recorded on September 17, 1962 at Sound Makers Studio in New York City with producer Alan Douglas. Ellington's contract with Columbia Records had expired, which allowed him to record with artist from other labels like Coleman Hawkins and John Coltrane; but it was this collaboration with his former bandmates Mingus and Roach that produced the most excitement and anticipation. Ellington brought four new compositions and updated three old standards with one of the most impressive rhythm sections in the history of jazz.  There was some residual tension in the air between Ellington and Mingus, who had been fired from the Duke's band decades earlier; and that tension feeds the dynamic and adventurous interplay on this fabulous set.
