super groovy delicious bite: devotion

Beach House settled into their groove with a more polished dream pop drone for the lush and languid liquid lovesongs of their sophomore slowburner. After their self-titled debut received critical praise, the Baltimore duo went back into the studio to work on the follow-up, 'Devotion' with Victoria LeGrand on vocals, keyboards, and organ and Alex Scally on guitar, organ, drum machine, and tape recorder.

Legrand says: "The process was longer. The first record was recorded in two days, the second in two weeks. We also spent a lot longer listening and mixing than on the first. There was a lot more material for 'Devotion'. We were also in a studio as opposed to Alex's basement. But the studio is run by Rob Girardi, the same guy who recorded the first record. The process also was much more intense and had a few moments of craziness, both bad and good."

Scally considers: "The actual approach was almost identical. I don’t think it was more complicated, we just had more time. So the 'complication' was just having the freedom to continue to follow our vision. We’ll probably spend the same amount of time, maybe a little more with the next album, but I’m thinking that since we both believe simplicity is the best thing for us, we’re going less complicated in every way."

'Devotion' ebbed onto the US album chart at one hundred and ninety-five and flowed up to number five on the US heatseekers chart.
