Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats pioneered distortion with this seminal rock and roll celebration of an Oldsmobile. The song was produced by Sam Phillips before he founded Sun Records. It was credited to Brenston, though it was composed and performed by Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm. It was the biggest R&B hit of that year and has been recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the the first Rock and Roll song ever recorded.

Patti Page had her biggest success with an orchestrated remake of a country and western hit by Pee Wee King's Golden West Cowboys. It was originally released as the B-side of 'Boogie Woogie Santa Claus'; but that song was later replaced with a new B-side, 'Long Long Ago'.

'Tennessee Waltz' was written by Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King in 1946. On a road trip to the Grand Old Opry, Stewart was inspired by hearing 'the Kentucky Waltz' on the radio. He wrote the lyrics on a matchbox to a tune King had written as the band's intro music. Their rendition made it to number three on the C&W chart two years later.

Page's version spent a total of thirteen weeks at the top of the pop chart (it also hit number two on the country chart) and has sold almost fifteen million copies. It became the fourth official song of the state of Tennessee in 1965.

Les Paul and Mary Ford recorded the definitive version of this jazz standard in their state of the art home studio. He used multi-tracking and close miking to produce the groundbreaking sound where he played numerous guitar parts and she harmonized with herself. Les and Mary (country music singer Colleen Summers) had been married in 1949 after the accident that left his right arm permanently set at right angle. During the years that they were married they had sixteen top ten hits and a syndicated TV show, 'Les Paul & Mary Ford At Home'



The song was written by Nancy Hamilton and Morgan Lewis for the 1940 musical 'Two For The Show', and has also been recorded by Bennie Goodman and Ella Fitzgerald. This version spent nine weeks at the top of the charts and also topped the R&B chart (a first for a white artist).
