how will the wolf survive?

Los Lobos sought the truth that we all look for in these songs of passion that combined their traditional latin roots with rockabilly, polka, honky tonk, blues, rock and soul.  The group had formed in East Los Angeles and experimented with several musical forms before focusing on la musìca norteña that they listened to as children, bringing in electric instrumentation and their own eclectic musical interests.  They secured a record deal with Slash Records and their EP '...And a Time to Dance' sold over fifty thousand copies.  As with the EP, T Bone Burnett produced 'How Will the Wolf Survive?' with Louis Perez on drums, guitar and requinto; David Hidalgo on vocals, accordion and guitar; Cesar Rosas on vocals, guitar and mandolin; Conrad Lozano on bass and guitarron;  and new member punk rocker Steve Berlin (who had co-produced the EP) joining the band on saxophone.  They started recording basic tracks at L.A.'s Capitol Studio, continued in a garage studio that belonged to a friend of Burnett's, and did final overdubs at Warner Brothers Studios.  The album title was inspired by a story from an old issue of National Geographic called "Where Can the Wolf Survive?" Perez considers:    "It was like our group, our story: What is this beast, this animal that the record companies can't figure out?  Will we be given the opportunity to make it or not?...'The Wolf' record was very pivotal for us.  We decided to take a responsible look at what we represented and where we came from as Mexican Americans. Was this band going to be a fun, sock-hop party band or actually show they're of reasonable intelligence and concern?"

'How Will the Wolf Survive?' made it to number seventy-seven on the US album chart.

"Will the Wolf Survive?"

Through the chill of winter

Running across the frozen lake
Hunters are out on his trail
All odds are against him
With a family to provide for
The one thing he must keep alive
Will the wolf survive

Drifting by the roadside

Climbs each storm and aging face
Wants to make some morning's fate
Losing to the range war
He's got two strong legs to guide him
Two strong arms keep him alive
Will the wolf survive

Standing in the pouring rain

All alone in a world that's changed
Running scared, now forced to hide
In a land where he once stood with pride
But he'll find his way by the morning light

Sounds across the nation

Coming from your hearts and minds
Battered drums and old guitars
Singing songs of passion
It's the truth that they all look for
The one thing they must keep alive
Will the wolf survive
Will the wolf survive
