youth and young manhood

The Kings of Leon found deliverance in the fiery rock and roll of this soulful southern stew.    Brothers Nathan, Caleb, and Jared Followill grew spent their childhood years traveling around the south and midwest as their father, a Pentecostal preacher, would move between engagements.  They often slept in their car and didn't stay in one place very long and were primarily home schooled by their mother.  Caleb says:   "People picture this great traveling lifestyle. There were moments that were awesome, and then there were moments that we don't think were that awesome. I guess it was tough, and it shows more on us now than it did then, because at the time it was just our lives and we didn't know it was weird...It kind of made us colder, it made it easier for us to walk away from people."

When their parents divorced, older brothers Nathan and Caleb moved to Nashville where they embraced the rock and roll lifestyle, while ten year old Jared went to live in Oklahoma.  In Nashville, the brothers began collaborating with songwriter Angelo Petraglia.  As they honed their craft, they caught the attention of RCA Records.  Rather than audition people for the group, they asked their younger brother and their cousin Matthew Followill to join.  Nathan remembers their mindset:   "We don't want to be Evan and Jaron. We're going to buy our little brother a bass, he's a freshman in high school. Caleb will teach himself the guitar, Matthew played guitar when he was 10 and I'll play the drums. They said, 'All right, we'll come down in one month and see you guys.'"

'Youth and Young Manhood' was recorded at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California and Shangri-La Studio in Malibu with Caleb Followill on vocals and rhythm guitar; Matthew Followill on lead guitar and piano; Jared Followill on bass guitar and piano; and Nathan Followill on drums, percussion, and vocals.  The sessions were produced by Angelo Petraglia and Ethan Johns.

'Youth and Young Manhood' went to number one hundred and thirteen in the US, ninety-seven in France, fifty-two in Germany, forty-six in Australia, forty-three in New Zealand, eighteen in Ireland, and number three in the UK.
