The Bats took their crepuscular jangle pop around the world with the moody rhythms of their full length indie rock debut. The band formed when Robert Scott, the bassist for the Clean and Paul Kean, the bassist for Toy Love got together with Malcolm Grant and Kaye Woodward from Lyndon and the Liars. Scott switched to guitar for the new combo: "We were pretty rough and ready and my guitar playing was pretty basic, too. I guess the way I write songs is like electric folk music in a certain way. We were not trying hard to sound like that; it's just the way we were then."
The Bats released three EP's over the next three years on New Zealand's (Noisy Land) Flying Nun Records before recording their full length debut 'Daddy's Highway'. Scott says: "We didn't really think too deeply about how that album was going to sound. Some of it was done in Glasgow over a week, so it was very relaxed and easy going. When we got back to New Zealand, we carried on in Christchurch and that was also quite relaxed. It was more about the songs and how we wanted them to sound; what's best for the song, what overdubs to do, does it need violin, what kind of vocal does it need, that kind of thing."
John Milton co-produced the sessions with the band at Reel Time in Glasgow, Scotland and Nightshift in Christchurch, New Zealand with Malcolm Grant on drums; Kaye Woodward on lead guitar and vocals; Robert Scott on lead vocals, rhythm guitar, and keyboards; and Paul Kean on bass. Kean also co-engineered and mixed the album with Arnold Von Bussell and Rob Pinder. Alastair Galbraith played violin on three tracks. 'Daddy's Highway' saw release in the US and the UK and created a buzz about the band and the Dunedin Sound.
