take me bak 'ome

Slade found their way back to the top of the charts and irked English teachers with this salacious boogie stomper.  'Take Me Bak 'Ome'  was written by lead singer Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea.  Lea composed the music and Holder the lyrics.  It was produced by Chas Chandler, capturing the band's live sound in the studio in what Holder describes as "classic Slade - really rowdy and boisterous."  Lea admits: "'Take Me Bak 'Ome' was an old song I'd had kicking around for ages. I re-vamped it a bit and nicked a phrase or two from The Beatles' 'Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey'. Nobody ever noticed."

Slade played a raucous performance at the four day Great Western Express Spring Festival in Bardney, Lincolnshire shortly after the single was released.  Holder recalls:  "We stole the show at the Lincoln Festival and 'Take Me Bak 'Ome' went straight to number one that week. The Live album rocketed up the charts too."

It went to ninety-seven in the US, forty-five in France, twelve in Belgium, ten in Germany, nine in Australia, eight in South Africa, five in the Netherlands, four in Ireland, and spent one week at the top of the British charts.  Lead guitarist Dave Hill says: "'Take Me Back ‘Ome' was a live, earth-dirt song - I felt much more out of that than I did from all the rest, it projected more, and it wasn’t just a hit record. I didn’t know if that kind of song could make it, and it was great having a thick, dirty song up at number one."

Came up to you one night
noticed the look in your eye
saw you was on your own
and it was alright
yeh it was alright.

Said I could call you Sidney
I couldn't make out why
standing here on your own
an' it was alright
yeh it was alright.

So won't you take me back home
take me back home
and we can find plenty to do
and that will be alright
yeh it will be alright.

You and your bottle of brandy
both of you smell the same
still on your feet still standing
so it was alright
yeh it was alright.

Superman comes to meet you
looks twice the size of me
I didn't stay round to say goodnight
so it was alright
yeh it was alright.

So won't you take me back home
take me back home
and we can find plenty to do
and that will be alright
yeh it will be alright.

Take me, take me, take me
take me bak 'ome
I luv ya
I want ya
Take me, take me, take me
take me bak 'ome
a'whatcha gon' do when ya take me bak 'ome
a'whatcha whatcha whatcha whatcha
whatcha gon' do?
