auf wiederseh'n sweetheart

Dame Vera Lynn became the first British performer to have a number one in the US with the sweet sorrow of this German valediction.  'Auf Wiederseh'n, Sweetheart' was originally a song called 'Auf wiedersehen, auf wiedersehen' written by German composer Eberhard Storch for his wife Maria who had taken ill.  Lynn was the Forces' Sweetheart during the second world war and during a vacation in Switzerland, she heard the song being sung in a bierkeller.  When she returned home, she found the music and commissioned John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons to write English lyrics for it.  Her recording featured accompaniment by Soldiers and Airmen of HM Forces and the Johnny Johnston Singers.

In July of 1952, 'Auf Wiederseh'n, Sweetheart' became the first song recorded by a foreign artist to make number one on the US Billboard charts, spending nine weeks at the top of the 'Best Sellers in Stores' chart, six weeks on the 'Most Played by Jockeys' chart, and four weeks on the 'Most Played in Jukeboxes'.  It would later appear on the first UK chart in November of 1952, although it had already enjoyed its peak popularity by then.

(Auf wiedersehen, auf wiedersehen)
(We'll meet again, sweetheart)

This lovely day has flown my way
The time has come to part
We'll kiss again, like this again
Don't let the teardrops start
With love that's true, I'll wait for you
Auf wiedersehen, sweetheart

Auf wiedersehen
Auf wiedersehen
We'll meet again, sweetheart
This lovely day has flown away
The time has come to part
We'll kiss again, like this again
Don't let the teardrops start
With love that's true, I'll wait for you
Auf wiedersehen, sweetheart
