Les Paul revolutionized the music industry with his studio innovations and the development of the electric guitar.  He had had hits backing Bing Crosby on "It's Been A Long, Long Time" and the Andrews Sisters on "Rumors Are Flying"; but it was with his solo recordings that he was able to innovate.  His album 'The New Sound' features the technique he developed in his garage studio of multi-track recording as well as a change from the clear, clean sound that was standard at the time:   "You should be able to add reverb to it, delay, flanging, fuzz – whatever you wish, whatever you can imaging that you want you should have on that instrument. I was going for the very clean sound too. To this moment I want a very clear sound, and then I want to be able to take that very clear sound and warp it or change it to the different sounds of the other player...Yeah, it was an exciting time. It happened in Chicago where my mother came down to visit. She said, I heard you on the radio last night. I said, I wasn't playing on the radio, I was here playing with The Andrews Sisters. She says, well you should do something about it, because they're sounding just like you!   So I got thinking about it, gave my notice and went to my garage and said, I'm not coming out of that garage until I have a sound that's different from anybody else! It took a couple of years of working on ideas; new sounds, a new way of recording and it turned out to be great. I didn't know it was going to change the world, but I knew it was going to make some noise."

Frank Sinatra recalled a love that used to be with the orchestrated introspection of this masterwork of melancholy. He had originally intended to work with Gordon Jenkins, who had done the arrangements for 'Where Are You?';  but, since he was unavailable, he went to work with Nelson Riddle.  Riddle did the arrangements; but was unable to conduct on the sessions for the album and Felix Slatkin was brought in to do so.  The recordings were done at Capitol Studio A, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California with producer Voyle Gilmore. 

'Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely' features Frank Sinatra on vocals; Nelson Riddle as arranger; Felix Slatkin as conductor; Bill Miller on piano; and Gus Bivona on alto saxophone.  The album was conceived and recorded as Sinatra's divorce from Ava Gardner was complete.  At the same time, Riddle's mother and daughter had both recently died.  Riddle considered:   "If I can attach events like that to music... perhaps 'Only the Lonely' was the result."

'Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely' went to number one on the Billboard pop album chart.  It was nominated for the Album of the Year and won the Grammy Award for Best Album Cover (painted by Nicholas Volpe).  In later years, Sinatra remarked at a party that this was his favorite of all of his albums.

Édith Piaf set aside her rosey signature song for two years before releasing it as a single. The melody for 'La Vie en Rose' was composed by Catalan musician Louis Guglielmi under the nom de plume Louiguy. Piaf wrote the lyrics, inspired in 1944 by an American man with the line "Quand il me tient dans ses bras..." ("When he takes me in his arms..."). Initially, the song was registered only to Louiguy because Piaf did not belong to the professional songwriter's union: Le Société des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique (SACEM). Piaf was convince by her inner circle not to release the song herself or perform it as they deemed it to be unworthy of the rest of her repertoire. In 1945, Marianne Michel recorded the first version of the song and changed the lyrics from "la vie" ("life") to "les choses" ("things"). The next year, Piaf reconsidered the song and began performing it live. The enthusiastic response from audiences led her to record it herself and it was released in 1947 on Columbia Records. 'La Vie en Rose' would make Piaf an international star, selling a million copies in the US, and becoming the biggest-selling single in Italy the next year and the ninth biggest-selling single in Brazil in 1949. Piaf also performed the song in the 1948 French movie 'Neuf Garçons, un Coeur'. In 1998, it received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.

This captivating standard speaks to a cherished moment that glows with love. Jerome Kern wrote 'The Way You Look Tonight' with Dorothy Fields, who recalled: "The first time Jerry played that melody for me I went out and started to cry. The release absolutely killed me. I couldn't stop, it was so beautiful."

Fred Astaire introduced the song in the film 'Swingtime', singing it alone at the piano while Ginger Rogers was in the next room. She walks in to hear the end of the song. 'The Way You Look Tonight' spent six weeks at number one and won the 1936 Academy Award for Best Song.

pennies from heaven

This standard found a silver lining in the dark grey cloud of the Great Depression. The songwriting team of Johnny Burke and Arthur Johnston composed ‘Pennies from Heaven’ in 1936. Johnson wrote the music and Burke did the lyrics. The song gave the title to two movies and has been featured in several other films. It has been recorded by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, Dinah Washington, Clark Terry, Frances Langford, Arthur Tracy, Big Joe Turner, Dean Martin, The Skyliners, and many others.








Bing Crosby introduced the song in the film ‘Pennies From Heaven’, for which it received an Academy Award nomination. His version with with Jimmy Dorsey and His Orchestra spent ten weeks at the top of the charts.


That same year Billie Holiday recorded a version with Teddy Wilson and His Orchestra. Their version peaked at number three.

During the brief time that they were a songwriting team, lyricist Mort Dixon and composer Ray Henderson had one big hit. 'Bye Bye Blackbird' was first published in 1926. That year alone saw the charting of four different versions by Gene Austin, Nick Lucas, Benny Kruger, and Leo Reisman. It has become a standard, with numerous versions recorded. Maschwitz wrote the lyrics under his pen name, Holt Marvell on a Sunday morning in his London flat. He read them to Jack Strachey over the phone and he began work on the music.
