Siouxsie and the Banshees found the cure for their intense gothic experiments in the orchestral pop swoon of this dazzling jamboree of surprises.   The band had seen numerous lineup changes since the core of  singer Siouxsie Sioux and bassist Steven Severin first performed at the 100 Club Punk Festival with Marco Pirroni and John Simon Ritchie (Sid Vicious).  They secured a deal with Polydor that allowed them creative autonomy and recorded the primal wail of 'The Scream' with  John McKay and Kenny Morris.  Morris and McKay left during the tour for 'Join Hands' and were replaced by The Cure's Robert Smith and Slits drummer Budgie (Peter Edward Clarke).  Their next album 'Kaleidoscope' retained Budgie and brought in guest guitarists Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols and John McGeoch of Magazine to create a more melodic sound.  With McGeoch still on board, they followed that triumph up with the gothic glory of 'Ju Ju'.  McGeoch would leave during the tour for the more experimental 'A Kiss in the Dreamhouse', leading to Robert Smith joining the group once more.  

During this time, Siouxsie and Budgie released the full length debut of their side project Creatures while Smith and Severin recorded 'Blue Sunshine' as The Glove.  The live document 'Nocturne' was followed up with their major label debut 'Hyaena' which featured Siouxsie Sioux on vocals;  Steven Severin on electric bass and keyboards;  Budgie on drums, percussion, and marimba;  and Robert Smith on guitars and keyboards;   with Robin Canter on woodwind and The Chandos Players on strings.  The band produced the sessions with co-producer and engineer Mike Hedges.  

'Hyaena' was their first album to chart in the US at number one hundred and fifty-seven, also going to ninety-eight in Australia, fifty in Sweden, eighteen in New Zealand, and number fifteen in the UK.

"Dear Prudence" was released as a single with Smith, the song became the band's biggest hit, going to number three in the UK. It was included on US pressings of 'Hyaena'.

Siouxsie and the Banshees looked out at the world, regrouped,  and modernized their sound for this candy coated goth rhapsody.    After 'Through the Looking Glass',  guitarist and keyboard player John Valentine Carruthers left the band and was and was replaced by keyboardist/cellist Martin McCarrick and ex-Specimen guitarist Jon Klein.  'Peepshow' was produced by the band with engineer Mike Hedges and features Siouxsie Sioux on vocals; Steven Severin on electric bass; Budgie on drums, percussion, and harmonica; Martin McCarrick on cello, keyboards, and accordion; and Jon Klein on guitar.   'Peepshow'  creeped up to sixty-eight in the US and number twenty in the UK.

"Peek-a-Boo"
Sioux says the song is about "the way that women are portrayed in our Fascist media."  It became a breakthrough hit for the band in the US, going to number fifty-three on the US pop chart, sixteen in the UK, eighteen in Ireland, fourteen on the US dance chart, and number one on the US hot modern rock tracks chart.

The queen of goth polished her sound and released this powerful transitional album with yet another new guitarist.   With a half dozen albums under their belt (The Scream in 1978,  Join Hands in 1979,  Kaleidoscope in 1980,  Juju in 1981,  A Kiss in the Dreamhouse in 1982,  and  Hyæna in 1984), Siouxsie and the Banshees recruited John Valentine Carruthers to replace Robert Smith, who had quit after having a nervous breakdown playing full time with two bands. When Siouxsie broke her kneecap during a live performance, the band settled into the studio to work on this dark and vibrant bridge between their more aggressive punk roots and the pop sheen that they would ultimately embrace.

Siouxsie says:  "I rarely delve into anything...I usually have a head-on collision with it...[My knee] dislocated completely and came out the other side. It was painful, but it looked much worse -- this kneecap hanging out where it shouldn't be. Complications set in, because I carried on the tour -- the leg was in plaster five weeks when it should only have been two. The plaster came off and it wouldn't bend, it was real horror story stuff. They told me 'yes, well of course the ligaments, have been torn out and they've bled and healed, so there's a lot of gunge and it won't bend', and I was threatened with being put under anaesthetic to have an 'assisted bend'. So I worked really hard with some weights at home, I'd rather be in pain on my own than have a doctor hear me go 'ouch'.... It's called ['Tinderbox'] because everything seemed to happen either around situations or the effect of weather, and the word conjures up something explosive that's to do with something being combustible, by the fact that the sun's there and it's made it that way, it's not man made. It has that theme to it, although it's all very diverse...We started recording it last May, for a month in Hansa and had problems with the producer...We're survivors because we turn disadvantages into advantages. There've been so many instances where catastrophe has struck the Banshees, but it motivates you once the feet have been put back on the ground again. We probably attract disaster for a very specific reason, it's totally out of our control. It's only in retrospect you realise it, at the time you're devastated. Maybe I'll look back and think 'thank God I dislocated my knee that time'. Certainly it made me sit back a bit... oh no, Godzilla's packed up again, I'll have to ask for a light... it's a good pick-up line ... is there someone handsome here?"
