Jimi Hendrix assembled a new group to lay down the hard funk machine gun blues of this incendiary tour de force.  After three groundbreaking albums with the Jimi Hendrix Experience ('Are You Experienced?' , 'Axis:  Bold As Love' , and 'Electric Ladyland' ), bassist Noel Redding left the group.  Hendrix began working with different musicians, performing at the Woodstock Festival with an expanded lineup that included bassist Billy Cox, guitarist Larry Lee, and percussionists Juma Sultan and Jerry Velez.  Cox and Lee (who had both played with Hendrix years earlier in Tennesee) appeared with Hendrix for an appearance on 'The Dick Cavett Show' before Lee would leave the group.  Hendrix and Cox began playing with drummer Buddy Miles and recording demos.  A series of shows at  Fillmore East in New York City were seen as an opportunity to fulfill contractual obligations with Capitol Records for another album of new material.  

'Band of Gypsys' was drawn from two shows that took place at the Fillmore on January 1, 1970 with Jimi Hendrix on electric guitar and vocals;   Billy Cox on bass guitar and vocals;   and  Buddy Miles on drums and vocals.  The album was produced by Jimi Hendrix with Wally Heider as live recording engineer, Eddie Kramer as studio mixing engineer, and Bob Ludwig as mastering engineer.  

Hendrix would admit:  "I wasn't too satisfied with the 'Band of [Gypsys]' album.  If it had been up to me I would have never put it out.  From a musician's point of view it was not a good recording and i was out of tune on a few things.  Not enough preparation went into it and it came out a bit 'grizzly' - We all felt shaky.  The thing was we owed the record compand an album and they were pushing us - so here it is.  There were some nice songs on the album - some nice ideas - particularly on side two, and we will be doing some of those on the tour."


'Band of Gypsys' still found its way to number fifteen in Germany, fourteen on the US R&B chart, nine in Norway, seven in the Netherlands, six in the UK, and number five in Canada and the US.  By the time it was released, the trio had already broken up.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience reached the pinnacle of their visionary musical explorations with this mindblowing magnum opus.  The success of  'Are You Experienced?' and  'Axis: Bold as Love' gave Hendrix the freedom to take his time with the recording of 'Electric Ladyland', experimenting in the studio in a painstakingly perfectionist process that eventually led co-producer Bryan "Chas" Chandler to quit the project and sell his share of Hendrix' management.

The sessions took place at Olympic Studios in London, and at Record Plant Studios and Mayfair Studios in New York with Jimi Hendrix on lead vocals, guitar, piano, percussion, comb and tissue paper kazoo, electric harpsichord, and bass on "Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland)", "Long Hot Summer Night", "Gypsy Eyes", "1983", "House Burning Down", and "All Along the Watchtower"; Noel Redding on backing vocals, bass on "Crosstown Traffic", "Little Miss Strange", "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)", "Burning of the Midnight Lamp", and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", acoustic guitar, and lead vocals on "Little Miss Strange"; Mitch Mitchell on backing vocals, drums (except on "Rainy Day Dream Away" and "Still Raining, Still Dreaming"), percussion, and lead vocals on "Little Miss Strange";    with Jack Casady on bass on "Voodoo Chile"; Brian Jones on percussion on "All Along the Watchtower"; Al Kooper on piano on "Long Hot Summer Night"; Dave Mason on twelve string guitar on "All Along the Watchtower" and backing vocals on "Crosstown Traffic"; The Sweet Inspirations on backing vocals on "Burning of the Midnight Lamp"; Steve Winwood on organ on "Voodoo Chile"; Chris Wood on flute on "1983... Hendrix described his daily discipline on The Dick Cavett Show:    "It's getting more spiritual. Pretty soon I believe people will have to rely on music to get some kind of peace of mind, or satisfaction, or direction, actually. More so than politics, the big ego scene. You know it's an art of words... Meaning nothing. Therefore you will have to get an earthier substance, like music or the arts...We want our sound to go into the soul of the audience, and see if it can awaken some little thing in their minds... 'Cause there are so many sleeping people...I don't really live on compliments. As a matter of fact, they have a way of distracting me. I know a whole lot of musicians, artists out there who hears the compliments and thinks 'wow, I must have been really great' and so they get fat and satisfied and they get lost and forget about their actual talent and start living in another world."  

'Electric Ladyland' found its way to number six in the UK and became Hendrix' only number one album in the US.  The diverse mix of psychedelic blues, funk, rock, soul, and jazz still defies categorization.  Hendrix considered:  "There's no such thing as revival.  I'm playing all i know.  I'm just playing the way i feel. "

The Jimi Hendrix Experience rush recorded the spacey studio psychedelica of their second album to fulfill contractual obligations and created a bold and bewitchingly brilliant bauble.  There was just over six months between the release of their debut 'Are You Experienced?' and 'Axis: Bold as Love'.  Their contract required that they produce two albums in 1967; so they stuck with the winning formula of producer Chas Chandler and engineer Eddie Kramer when they went into Olympic Studios in London with Jimi Hendrix on vocals, electric guitar, piano, recorder, and the voice of "Mr. Paul Caruso" on "EXP"; Mitch Mitchell on drums, glockenspiel, backing vocals, and the voice of "interviewer" on "EXP"; and Noel Redding on backing vocals, bass guitars (four and eight-string), foot stamping, and lead vocals on "She's So Fine"; as well as Chas Chandler, Gary Leeds, Graham Nash, and Michael Jeffery adding more foot stamping on "If 6 Was 9"; and Trevor Burton and Roy Wood on backing vocals.   

The band's psychedelic rhythm and blues was taken to the next level with extensive studio gimmickry.  When the recording was finished, Hendrix left the master tapes for side one in a taxi and it had to be quickly remixed in a single night.  The album was released in December of 1967 in the UK; but the release was held off until mid-January in the US for fear it would interfere with sales of the debut.  'Axis: Bold as Love' went to number twelve in Norway, five in the UK, and number three in the US.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience changed the face of music with the mindblowing psychedelic blues and revolutionary electric guitar explorations of their legendary debut.  The left-handed Hendrix had taught himself to play guitar by using turning a standard guitar upside down.  Hendrix said:  "When I first started playing guitar is was way up in the Northwest, in Seattle, Washington. They don’t have too many of the real blues singers up there. When I really learned to play was down South. Then I went into the Army for about nine months, but I found a way to get out of that. When I came out I went down South and all the cats down there were playing blues, and this is when I really began to get interested in the scene."   He was playing as Jimmy James with the Blue Flame when he was discovered in New York by Chas Chandler of the Animals, who brought him to England and introduced him to bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell.  Chandler produced 'Are You Experienced?' over five months at De Lane Lea, CBS, and Olympic Studios in London while the power trio toured Europe to rave reviews.  The fusion of the different members' blues, rock, and jazz backgrounds created something completely new.  Hendrix explained: "This is more like a free-style thing. We know what song we’re gonna play and what key it’s in and the chord sequences, and we just take it from there. And so far it hasn’t bugged me in any way like saying, 'Oh, no! There he goes playing that rock and roll bass pattern again.' Everybody’s doing pretty cool."   

Hendrix used electronic feedback in a controlled style that had not been heard before, using his Stratocaster to evoke emotional nuance as well as playful riffs and searing anthems.  Every song on the debut is a classic, with varied styles giving rise to musical movements like heavy metal, hard rock, funk rock and psychedelic soul.  The UK version of the album excluded the three singles 'Hey Joe, 'Purple Haze', and 'The Wind Cries Mary', replacing them with 'Red House', 'Remember', and 'Can You See Me?'.  The album was finally rereleased on CD as 'Experience Hendrix' with all of the songs including the B-sides of the singles:  'Stone Free', '51st Anniversary', and 'Highway Chile'.
