dusk

The The moved from the global to the personal for the dark and brooding catharsis of this slow emotion replay.  Having expanded on the core lineup from his celebrated 'Mind Bomb' album, Matt Johnson strips away the beat heavy production of previous albums to focus on a more streamlined sound:    "Perhaps the most obvious difference with that album is that it is so pared down compared to all the others. Doing the world tour gave me the chance to look at the songs closely and see what I like and didn't like in them. Consequently I became more sensitive to the idea of dynamics and the songs written for 'Dusk' became more and more concise...It's probably fair to say that  'Dusk'  is my most emotionally direct record. A lot of it had to do with the fact that I'd reached 30, which always seems to be a natural turning point, especially for men. It seems natural to take stock of things at that juncture. You start noticing the changes in your body - the fact that it takes longer to recover from punishment than it used to. But it's not all negative. As my father says, 'Every age has its compensations', and I'm definitely much happier than I was when I was 21."

'Dusk' features Matt Johnson on vocals, guitar, and keyboards; Johnny Marr on guitar, harmonica, and backing vocal; James Eller on bass guitar and backing vocal; and David Palmer on drums and backing vocal;  with D. C. Collard adding keyboards, and Vinnie Colaiuta and Bruce Smith playing additional drums.   A film  directed by Tim Pope was made in conjunction with the album called 'From Dusk 'Til Dawn'

'Dusk'  charted in nine countries, going to number one hundred and forty-two in the US, thirty-seven in the Netherlands, twenty-eight in Austria, twenty in Australia and Switzerland, fifteen in Sweden, ten in Norway, six in New Zealand, and number two in the UK.
