'Grease' was the word that gave groove and meaning to the soundtrack of the biggest movie musical of all time. Based on the stage musical by Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs. 'Grease' was directed by Randal Kleiser and produced by Robert Stigwood and Allan Carr for Paramount Pictures. Henry Winkler turned down the part of Danny Zuko, which was given to John Travolta who suggested Randal Kleiser to direct and Olivia Newton-John for the part of Sandra Dee: "I had known Olivia prior to 'Grease', because she was the biggest recording artist in the world at the time. But I also had a tremendous crush on her! I championed her for this part. I felt like there was no-one else in the world that could've done it."
Newton-John reveals: "We both had a crush on each other. It created great chemistry...John walked up my driveway in Malibu and he was gorgeous, and he had these bright blue eyes, which he still has, and I was captured by him. He was so sweet and nice, and I was very nervous about making a movie and he convinced me that yes, I should do a screen test...and we did the screen test and it was great and here we are! ... It’s amazing isn’t it? It’s like thirty years later and people are still loving it and singing it. I think it was another time. I think people think of the fifties in kind of like a real magic way. I think the movie had a great atmosphere and vibe. It was a school movie and people always loved relating to school. It just had a great energy and it had great music. And it was fun."
The soundtrack was produced by Louis St. Louis, John Farrar, Barry Gibb, Albhy Galuten, and Karl Richardson at Filmways/Wally Heider Recording Studios, United Western Studios, and Hollywood Sound Recorders.
