The Go-Betweens returned to Australia to record the polished acoustic pop of this irresistible soap opera. After recording a string of critically acclaimed albums in Europe (three in England and one in France), the group decided to go back to their home country to work with producer Mark Wallis on '16 Lovers Lane'. Bassist Robert Vickers stayed behind and was replaced by John Willsteed for the sessions that took place at Studios 301 in Sydney with Amanda Brown on violin, oboe, guitar, and vocals; Robert Forster on vocals, rhythm guitar, and harmonica; Grant McLennan on vocals and lead guitar; Lindy Morrison on drums; and John Willsteed on bass guitar, guitar, Hammond organ, and piano; with Michael Armiger playing bass on "Running the Risk of Losing You".
The sound of the album is intimate and organic, giving the emotional songs of Grant McLennan and Robert Forster more depth and resonance. '16 Lovers Lane' yielded the band's greatest commercial success; but it was not enough for them to continue; and, after six critically acclaimed albums, the Go-Betweens would call it quits. More than a decade later, McLennan and Forster would reform the band with a different lineup.
"Streets of Your Town" became the band's biggest single, going to number eighty in the UK, seventy in Australia, and thirty in New Zealand.
"Was There Anything I Could Do?" found its way to number sixteen on the US modern rock tracks chart.
