19

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins established herself as a force to be reckoned with on the stunning synthesis of blues, folk, jazz, pop, and soul of this captivating coming out.  She started singing at the age of four; and, after recording some demos herself in college, she got the attention of XL Recordings, who left her several messages before she decided to go to a meeting.  '19' was recorded at Angel Studios, Bimbos, Highline Ballroom, Konk, Metropolis Studios, Olympic Studios, Rak Studios, Roxy, The Townhouse,  and World Cafe with producers Jim Abbiss, Mark Ronson, and Eg White.

She wrote or co-wrote all but one of the songs on the album.  Adele says:  “My debut album is about being between 18 and 19; about love. ‘Daydreamer’ is about this boy I was in love with, like proper in love with. He was bi and I couldn’t deal with that. All the things I wanted from my boyfriend, he was never going to be. I get really jealous anyway, so I couldn’t fight with girls and boys. It’s quite a sad album, [with songs about] being cheated on and not getting what you want ... I just kinda remember becoming a bit of a woman during that time. And I think that is definitely documented in the songs ... I don't have a hole in my soul.  I'm not insecure in any way. What I think it is, is, I'm really awful at saying how I feel. When it comes to, like, 'I love you', or 'Mum, you're really pissing me off', or to a friend, 'Look, I don't like us being friends any more', I can never say it. I hate confrontation. So I've always written it down. Even when I was little. If I had an argument with Mum, I'd write down how she made me feel. I prefer people to write it down in a message or text or email. When I broke up with my boyfriend I did it by text. 'Babe, I can't do it no more.' I can't believe I just told you that. And now I write it in songs. That's what it is."

'19' went to number fifteen in Germany and Switzerland, seven in Norway, four in Canada and the US, three in Australia and New Zealand, two in Ireland, and number one the Netherlands and the UK.  In Britain it made its debut at number one.  The album has sold over seven million copies worldwide.  In 2008, '19' was nominated for the Mercury Prize and won Adele the Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

I've made up my mind,
Don't need to think it over,
If I'm wrong I am right,
Don't need to look no further,
This ain't lust,
I know this is love but,
If I tell the world,
I'll never say enough,
Cause it was not said to you,
And that's exactly what I need to do,
If I'm in love with you,
Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere,
Or would it be a waste?
Even If I knew my place should I leave it there?
Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere
I'd build myself up,
And fly around in circles,
Waiting as my heart drops,
And my back begins to tingle
Finally could this be it
Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere,
Or would it be a waste?
Even if I knew my place should I leave it there?
Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere yeah
Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if, it leads nowhere,
Or would it be a waste?
Even if I knew my place should I leave it there?
Should I give up,
Or should I just keep on chasing pavements?
Should I just keep on chasing pavements? Or
Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere,
Or would it be a waste?
Even if I knew my place should I leave it there?
Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?

Even if it leads nowhere
