pump up the volume

The only single from this one-off collaboration used over two hundred and fifty samples and made them an influential one-hit wonder. 4AD label head Ivo Watts-Russell conceived of a collaboration between two groups on his roster: Colourbox and A R Kane. Both groups had expressed a desire to make a hit dance record; but once in the studio they realized that their different working methods were incompatible. They separated and made their own tracks and then shared them. Colourbox came up with 'Pump Up the Volume' while A R Kane created 'Anitina (The First Time I See She Dance)', then each group added to the other's track. Both singles were released for club play in the UK with no credits and became underground sensations. Extensive samples were added by DJ's Chris "C.J." Macintosh and Dave Dorrell to 'Pump Up the Volume' and a new remix was released only a week later. Some of the samples include: Afrika Bambaataa and James Brown, "Unity (Part Three - Nuclear Wildstyle)"; Bar-Kays, "Holy Ghost"; James Brown, "Super Bad (Part One)"; Tom Browne, "Funkin' for Jamaica (N.Y.)"; Bobby Byrd, "Hot Pants - I'm Coming, I'm Coming, I'm Coming"; Choice M.C.'s and Fresh Gordon, "Gordy's Groove"; Criminal Element Orchestra, "Put the Needle to the Record"; Eric B. & Rakim, "I Know You Got Soul (a cappella version)"; Fab 5 Freddy featuring Beeside, "Change le Beat"; D.ST and Jalal Mansur Nuriddin, "Mean Machine"; Graham Central Station, "The Jam"; Jimmy Castor Bunch, "It's Just Begun"; Kool & the Gang, "Jungle Jazz"; George Kranz, "Din Daa Daa (Trommeltanz)"; Lovebug Starski and The Harlem World Crew, "Positive Life"; Trailer to the 1968 film Mars Needs Women ; Montana Sextet, "Who Needs Enemies (With a Friend Like You)"; Nuance, "Loveride"; Original Concept, "Pump That Bass"; Pleasure, "Celebrate the Good Things"; Pressure Drop, "Rock the House (You'll Never Be)"; Public Enemy, "You're Gonna Get Yours (My 98 Oldsmobile)"; Run-D.M.C., "Here We Go (Live at the Funhouse)"; The Soul Children, "I Don't Know What This World Is Coming To"; Stock Aitken Waterman, "Roadblock (7" version)"; Trouble Funk, "Pump Me Up"; Fred Wesley and The J.B.'s, "Introduction to the J.B.'s"; Fred Wesley and The J.B.'s, "More Peas"; Whistle, "(Nothing Serious) Just Buggin'"; and Dunya Yusin, "Abu Zeluf".

It was this heavily-sampled version that began to climb the charts. After an interview in which Dorrell bragged about all of the samples, an injunction was filed by music producers Stock Aitken Waterman for the use of a sample from their hit single 'Roadblock' and, after some negotiation, the offending sample was removed from versions released outside of the UK. 'Pump Up the Volume' was an international smash, going to fourteen in Sweden; thirteen on the US pop chart; nine in France; eight on the US hot R&B/hip-hop chart; five in Ireland; four in Austria; three in Switzerland; two in Germany; and number one in Canada, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the UK, and the US hot dance club play chart. The group name MARRS is an acronym of the forenames of the five 4AD collaborators: Martyn Young (from Colourbox), Alex Ayuli and Rudy Tambala (from A.R. Kane), Russell Smith (an associate A.R. Kane member and founder of Terminal Cheesecake), and Steve Young (from Colourbox).
