all summer long

The Beach Boys got around their family management and rush recorded this seasoned surf rock severance.  The band had begun working on 'All Summer Long' in October of 1963 with most of the work done in April and May of 1964.  Songwriter and producer Brian Wilson had wanted to take extra time on the album; but the record label pushed him to finish so they could compete with the British Invasion sweeping the nation.  The sessions took place at United Western Recorders in Los Angeles, California with Al Jardine on harmony and backing vocals, bass guitar;   Mike Love on lead, harmony and backing vocals, hand claps;   Brian Wilson on production; lead, harmony and backing vocals; piano, organ, keyboard, Baldwin harpsichord; and marimba;    Carl Wilson on harmony and backing vocals; lead guitar;   Dennis Wilson on lead, harmony and backing vocals; drums;    with   Hal Blaine on timbales;  Chuck Britz as engineer;  Steve Douglas on tenor saxophone;  Jay Migliori on baritone saxophone;  and Ray Pohlman on bass guitar.

During the recording of 'I Get Around' the band fired father and manager Murry Wilson.  Brian Wilson would later reveal:  "He's really grooving now - grooving great. But it didn't work as manager.  We love the family thing – y'know: three brothers, a cousin and a friend is a really beautiful way to have a group – but the extra generation can become a hang-up".

'All Summer Long' went to number four on the US album chart and became their last album to focus on the beach and surf culture.

'I Get Around' became the band's first US number one single.

Round round get around

I get around
Yeah
Get around round round I get around
I get around
Get around round round I get around
From town to town
Get around round round I get around
I'm a real cool head
Get around round round I get around
I'm makin' real good bread

I'm gettin' bugged driving up and down the same old strip

I gotta finda new place where the kids are hip

My buddies and me are getting real well known

Yeah, the bad guys know us and they leave us alone

I get around

Get around round round I get around
From town to town
Get around round round I get around
I'm a real cool head
Get around round round I get around
I'm makin' real good bread
Get around round round I get around
I get around
Round
Get around round round oooo
Wah wa ooo
Wah wa ooo
Wah wa ooo

We always take my car cause it's never been beat

And we've never missed yet with the girls we meet

None of the guys go steady cause it wouldn't be right

To leave their best girl home now on Saturday night

I get around

Get around round round I get around
From town to town
Get around round round I get around
I'm a real cool head
Get around round round I get around
I'm makin' real good bread
Get around round round I get around
I get around
Round
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

Round round get around

I get around
Yeah
Get around round round I get around
Get around round round I get around
Wah wa ooo
Get around round round I get around
Oooo ooo ooo
Get around round round I get around
Ahh ooo ooo
Get around round round I get around
Ahh ooo ooo
Get around round round I get around
Ahh ooo ooo

surfer girl

The Beach Boys made a creative leap forward with the orchestral experimentation and lush harmonic balladry of this shimmering summery surge.  Having struck gold earlier that year with their sophomore release 'Surfin' U.S.A.', the group was ready to change up their surf rock formula.  For the first time, Brian Wilson took the reigns as producer for the sessions at United & Western Studios in Hollywood, California.

'Surfer Girl' credits Al Jardine on backing and harmony vocals, bass guitar, and hand claps; Mike Love on lead, backing and harmony vocals and hand claps; David Marks on backing and harmony vocals, rhythm guitar, and hand claps; Brian Wilson on lead, backing and harmony vocals, bass guitar, piano, organ, and hand claps; Carl Wilson on backing and harmony vocals, lead guitar, bass guitar, and hand claps; Dennis Wilson on lead, backing and harmony vocals, drums, and hand claps;   with Hal Blaine adding drums and percussion; Steve Douglas on tenor saxophone; and Maureen Love on harp.

'Surfer Girl' was the second of three albums (followed by 'Little Deuce Coup') the Beach Boys released in 1963, a banner year for the band.  The album went to number thirteen in the UK and number seven in the US, where it was certified gold.

Brian Wilson from the reissue liner notes:  "'Surfer Girl' was a good step in the right direction. The single, “Surfer Girl,” was my group’s ballad theme song. It means a lot to me, spiritual, and it is really a song about how the group first started singin’ pretty harmonies. The introduction to this song is, at first, a simple one but if you study the form, it is original. To me, it represents the start of music when we first got movin’. “Catch A Wave” represents my first big Beach Boy vocal arrangement. I am proud of it and I can remember how excited I was when I first arranged it. I jumped up from my piano and yelled for my mom and dad to come hear it. They flipped. The boys loved recordin’ it with me. We were so wired when we did it that a little extra bit of juice was flowin’. It was where The Beach Boys were at during that time. We love doing “Little Deuce Coupe.” It was good “shuffle” rhythm, which was not like most of the rhythms of the records on the radio in those days. It had a bouncy feel to it. Like most of our records, it had a competitive lyric. This record was my favorite BeachBoy car song. I also enjoyed producing “In My Room.” There is a story behind this song. When Dennis, Carl and I lived in Hawthorne as kids, we all slept in the same room. One night I sang the song “Ivory Tower” to them and they liked it. Then a couple of weeks later, I proceeded to teach them both how to sing the harmony parts to it. It took them a little while, but they finally learned it. We then sang this song night after night. It brought peace to us. When we recorded “In My Room,” there was just Dennis, Carl and me on the first verse…and we sounded just like we did in our bedroom all those nights. This story has more meaning then ever since Dennis’ death. “Hawaii” features me on falsetto. “Our Car Club” is my production ability brought to a higher level. I really felt this one as a saxophone trip. “Surfers Rule” was a big competitive step when we said in the fade-out, “Four Season, you better believe it!” we started some trouble around town and we haven’t been able to stop ever since. This attitude we had was liked by some people and not liked by others. I have heard some positive feedback and some negative feedback over the years. I did for competitive music what Jack LaLanne did for health. Anyway, as usual, the album, Surfer Girl, has a bit for everybody. Enjoy."

"Surfer Girl"
"Back in 1961, I'd never written a song in my life. I was nineteen years old. And I put myself to the test in my car one day. I was actually driving to a hot dog stand, and I actually created a melody in my head without being able to hear it on a piano. I sang it to myself; I didn't even sing it out loud in the car. When I got home that day, I finished the song, wrote the bridge, put the harmonies together and called it 'Surfer Girl'."

smiley smile

The Beach Boys pulled together the psychedelic sound effects and harmonized hilarity of this quirky musical quilt from the scattered pieces of an abandoned ambitious albatross.  Brian Wilson had big plans for the band's follow up to their landmark 'Pet Sounds' album.  Hoping to make a dramatic leap forward, he enlisted Van Dyke Parks as a songwriting partner for a project that he called 'Dumb Angel'.  It later became known as 'SMiLE'; and the songs that they came up with were heavily influenced by an assortment of drugs.  The rest of the band, especially Mike Love, were vehemently opposed to the new material; and, after a heated argument in the studio, Parks bowed out of the project.  In the aftermath, Brian Wilson retreated from recording and 'SMiLE' was shelved.  As the band realized that they needed to fulfill their contractual obligations to Capitol Records, they quickly re-recorded some of the material from the 'SMiLE' sessions with simplified arrangements at Brian Wilson's home studio in Bel Air.  Brian Wilson produced the sessions with Alan Jardine on vocals, bass, and guitar; Bruce Johnston on vocals, bass, and keyboards; Mike Love on vocals; Brian Wilson on bass, keyboards, and vocals; Carl Wilson on vocals, guitars, and bass; Dennis Wilson on drums, and vocals; Mike Deasy Sr. on guitar; and Lyle Ritz on upright bass.

'Smiley Smile' was a disappointment to fans after the hype surrounding the 'SMiLE' project; but it went to number forty-one in the US and number nine in the UK.   To bolster sales, the album included the band's number one smash 'Good Vibrations' over the objections of Brian Wilson.  It marked the end of Brian Wilson's creative dominance of the group.  The opening track 'Heroes and Villains' was a minor hit for the band, going to number thirteen in Australia, twelve in the US, eight in the UK, and seven in Sweden.  The single and album were released on the Beach Boys own Brother Records label and distributed by Capitol.

pacific ocean blue

Dennis Wilson became the first Beach Boy to release a solo album with this soulful slice of broken down brilliance.  'Pacific Ocean Blue' was a very personal reflection of Wilson's search for truth.  He considered:  "There's no escape from being honest. On the inside, we're always honest. On the outside, we can bullshit. Inside, there's no escape, and I just..., that's how I felt...I think there are a lot of sick people that need a lot of help...people who have to be educated, have to grow. I feel through art.....it can be a great deal of help, like Brian in the sixties with what he did and what he can do. I wish he would get off his ass and do it again...I have great faith in life itself. I'm religious, and I'm not religious. I get stoned, and I don't get stoned. I smoke a cigarette, and I don't smoke a cigarette. I live my life, period. I take it as it comes, and I take responsibility for it. I don't think I should judge people, but I think it's time for people to stop fighting. It's such a profound question that a master would have trouble answering it. Maharishi would say, 'Meditate'. All I say is : 'Enjoy life, try to be an example'."

Carli Munoz, Gregg Jakobson and Dennis Wilson produced the sessions at the Beach Boys'  Brother Studios in Santa Monica, California.  Steven Moffitt was the chief engineer with Earle Mankey and John Hanlon assisting at the helm and on guitar.  Dennis Wilson not only plays drums and sings, he tries his hand at violin, piano, tuba, clavinet, oboe, moog and harmonica; with Munoz on piano, keyboards, moog synthesizer, and percussion; Carl Wilson on lead guitar and vocals; Eddie Tuleja on guitar and vocals; Ed Carter on bass and guitar; Sterling Smith on keyboards; Manolo Badrena on percussion; Dean Torrence and Bruce Johnston on background vocals; Chuck Domanico, Dave Hessler, James Jamerson and Wayne Tweed on bass; Tommy Smith, Bobby Figueroa, Ricky Fataar and Hal Blaine on drums; Michael Andreas, Lance Buller, Janice Hubbard, Bill Lamb, Charles McCarthy on Horns; Sid Sharp worked the live strings ensemble; and vocals were contributed by Alexander Hamilton's Double Rock Baptist Choir.

Wilson said:  "Gregg Jakobson stood by my side and supported me and assisted lyrically. James William Guercio supports me 100%. he stands behind me completely...I take full responsibility. I want to be....I want to meet with everyone in the field, want it to be different. It think music belongs on a personal level, instead of the mindless corporation ordering the artist 'do this, do that, do this'. People have to meet, discover, grow, build...I just don't stop recording. You're talking to, if there ever was, a freak or somebody completely into it, I am home here at the studio or playing music on the road. When I go to the shack that I stay at, I hate it. Music is everything."

'Pacific Ocean Blue' peaked at number ninety-six on the US album chart; but it sold over three hundred thousand copies, which was better than 'The Beach Boys Love You', released that same year.  Nevertheless, it went out of print within a year due to contractual disputes.  Wilson reflected:  "I never liked guys who were soloist drummers.  I like the hypnotic rhythm that's consistent -- something you can get lost in. It's a perfect feel. The feeling within that rhythm is something I like very much. Then it makes the whole song and program work together. The thing I love about music is, if you play and let go of yourself it becomes timeless."

"River Song"
"A few years ago, I was in the High Sierras walking by this river that was very small and it kept getting bigger and bigger....that's the guitar sound on the track. And then thinking, Los Angeles vs. the High Sierras, it just makes me sick to think of what's happening here. That's the lyrical idea; Carl assisted on some of the lyrics. Musically, it came from the river...Ninety per cent of those voices are mine."

"'Dreamer' is about Christ. Musically, I played the bass harmonica on that; I played practically everything on it."
