Bob Dylan's backing band came out of the basement and into their own with this unique and emotional blend of country, folk, and rootsy rock. They were known as the Hawks when Dylan recruited them to back him on his revolutionary first electric tour as Bob Dylan and the Band; and they even participated in sessions for his 'Blonde On Blonde' album. After Dylan was injured in a motorcycle accident, the members of the Band joined him in Woodstock, New York where they recorded over one hundred demos during his convalescence in 1967. Some of these recordings were released in 1975 as 'The Basement Tapes' along with demos by the Band. Around this time, the Band moved into a pink house in in West Saugerties, New York where they recorded many of the demos and continued to compose what would become 'Music from Big Pink'.
The album was recorded in studios in New York and Los Angeles with Rick Danko on bass guitar, fiddle, and vocals; Levon Helm on drums, tambourine, and vocals; Garth Hudson on electronic organ, piano, clavinet, and soprano & tenor saxophones; Richard Manuel on piano, organ, drums, and vocals; and Robbie Robertson on electric & acoustic guitars, and vocals; with producer John Simon on baritone horn, tenor saxophone, and piano. 'Music from Big Pink' went to number thirty on the US album chart and has gone on to become a resonant classic. The album cover was painted by Bob Dylan.

'The Weight' became a classic even though it only charted at number sixty-three in the US. It went to thirty-five in Canada and twenty-one in the UK.
I pulled into Nazareth,
I was feelin' about half past dead
Just need to find a place where I can lay my head
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand and,
"No", was all he said
Take a load off Anny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Anny
And you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me)
I picked up my bag and I went lookin' for a place to hide
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side
And I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on, would you go downtown"
And she said, "Well, I gotta go but my friend can stick around"
And take a load off Anny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Anny
And you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me)
Go down, Miss Moses, there ain't nothin' that you can say
'Cause just ol' Luke and Luke's waitin' on the Judgment Day
"Well, now Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?"
He said, "Do me a favor, son, won't you stay an' keep Anna Lee company?"
Take a load off Anny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Anny
And you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me)
Crazy Chester followed me and he caught me in the fog
He said, "I will fix your rags, if you'll take Jack, my dog"
I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man"
He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can?"
Take a load off Anny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Anny
And you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me)
Catch a Cannonball, now, to take me down the line
My, my bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time
To get back to Miss Anny, you know she's the only one
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone
Take a load off Anny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Anny
And you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me)
