gimmie some lovin'

When the Spencer Davis Group finally broke through in the US with this soulful raveup, they were so glad they made it. Steve Winwood, Spencer Davis, and Muff Winwood wrote the song very quickly. Muff recalls, "Steve had been singing, 'Gimme some lovin',' just yelling anything. It took about an hour to write, then down the pub for lunch." The song borrows from the riff from '(Ain't That) A Lot of Love' by Homer Banks. The versions released in the US and the UK were slightly different; but were both hits making it to number seven and number two respectively.

Hey!
Well my temperature's rising
And my feet left the floor
Crazy people knocking,
'cause they want some more.
Let me in baby,
I don't know what you got
You better take it easy.
This place is hot.
And i'm
So glad you made it
So glad you made it
You gotta
Gimme some lovin'
Gimme some lovin'
Gimme some lovin' everyday.

Hey!
My head's a-spinning
And I'm floating to sound
Too much is happening
'cause you're not around
It's been a hard day
And nothing went too good
I'm gonna relax
Like everybody should

And I'm
So glad you made it
So glad you made it
You gotta
Gimme some lovin'
Gimme some lovin'
Gimme some lovin' everyday

Hey!
I feel so good
Everything is gettin' higher.
You better take some time out
'cause the place is on fire.
Better stop baby
I have so much to do.
We made it, baby.
And it happened to you.

So glad you made it
So glad you made it
You gotta
Gimme some lovin'
Gimme some lovin'
Gimme some lovin' everyday.

So glad you made it
So glad you made it
You gotta
Gimme some lovin'
Gimme some lovin'

Gimme some lovin' everyday.

somebody help me

Spencer Davis' Rhythm and Blues Quartette could do no wrong with their second consecutive chart topper. After the success of 'Keep On Running', producer Chris Blackwell quickly followed it up using the same fuzzbox formula, and another song from fellow Island Records artist Jackie Edwards. It was the last number one for the Spencer Davis Group.

Somebody help me, yeah
Somebody help me now
Won't somebody tell me
What I've done wrong
When I was just
A little boy of seventeen
I had a girl
She was my queen
She didn't love me like I loved her
Now I know
Now I'm so lonesome on my own

Somebody help me, yeah
Somebody help me now
Won't somebody tell me
What I've done wrong

I need someone in my life
I need a girl to hold me tight
Someone who can make me feel
Make me feel all right

Somebody help me, yeah
Somebody help me now
Won't somebody tell me
What I've done wrong

Somebody help me, yeah
Somebody help me now
Somebody help me, yeah
Somebody help me now
Somebody help me, yeah
Somebody help me now

keep on running

Seventeen year old little Stevie Winwood had his first number one song with his brother Muff in the Spencer Davis Group. Island impresario Chris Blackwell asked Jamaican singer-songwriter Jackie Edwards if he had anything that the band could record. Steve Winwood reworked the ska tune into a rock sound using a fuzzbox effect on the guitar. Blackwell produced the single with a loan from Scala Brown Associates obtained by offering a large share of the Island label as security. With the success of the song, he was able to pay off the loan without losing the shares.

Keep on runnin’Keep on hidin’
One fine day I’m gonna be the one
To make you understand
Oh yeah
I’m gonna be your man
Hey hey hey
Everyone is talkin’ about me
Makes me feel so bad
Hey hey hey
Everyone is laughing at me
Makes me feel so sad
Keep on runnin’
Hey hey
All right!
Keep on runnin’
Runnin’ from my arms
One fine day I’m gonna be the one
To make you understand
Oh yeah
I’m gonna be your man

Hey hey hey
Everyone is talkin’ about me
Makes me feel so sad
Hey hey hey
Everyone is laughin’ at me
Makes me feel so bad
Keep on runnin’
Runnin’ from my arms
One fine day I’m gonna be the one
To make you understand
Oh yeah
I’m gonna be your man
