Rod Stewart had his biggest hit with this scandalous seduction. It was recorded with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section.at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama for his album 'A Night on the Town' with vocals done later at Caribou Ranch Studios in Colorado. Stewart's girlfriend Britt Ekland did the whispers and moans at the end of the song. He says, "I remember I got her drunk, pissed as a fart to sing that old French bollocks on the end, because she didn't want to do it." With its suggestive lyrics about a girl losing her virginity, the song was banned by many radio stations. Despite this, 'Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright)' was a top five hit all over the world, hitting number one in Germany and Sweden; as well as the US, where it spent eight weeks at the top of the charts and was the biggest hit of the year.

Rod Stewart kept us amused and broke records with his first number one. Rod says, "Maggie May was more or less a true story, about the first woman I had sex with, at the Beaulieu Jazz Festival. It nearly got left off because the label said it didn't have a melody. I said, 'Well, we've run out of time now, these are all the tracks we've recorded. They said, Alright, then, bring it on." He wrote the song with classical guitarist Martin Quittenton and recorded it with members of his band the Faces (although they were uncredited for legal reasons) for his second solo album 'Every Picture Tells a Story'. Ray Jackson played the familiar mandolin solo. It was originally the B-side to 'Reason to Believe'; but American DJ's started playing 'Maggie May' instead. In October of 1971, he became the first artist in history to have the number one single and the number one album in the US and the UK simultaneously. At the same time, it was also the number one single in Australia.

'Reason to Believe' was a cover of the song by American folk singer Tim Hardin. In addition to reaching number one as a double A-side with 'Maggie May', it charted again twenty-two years later after he performed it on 'MTV Unplugged', totalling forty-one weeks on the Hot 100, the longest stretch of any his singles.

The prolific Roderick David Stewart made the best out of the bad and just laughed it off to achieve the pinnacle of his artistic success with this sensitive and passionate blend of country, blues, folk, and rock. The acoustic beauty of the mandolins, fiddles, and pedal steel guitars provides a stirring counterpoint to the bluesy rock swagger. All of the members of his band the Faces played on the album, though uncredited at the time. His raspy voice, the excellent songs, and the top notch musicianship came together on this album like nothing else he ever did.  'Every Picture Tells A Story'  reached number one on album charts in the UK and the US simultaneously, as well as topping album charts in Australia and Canada.

'Maggie May' became an international smash hit.  It was at the top of the charts in both the UK and the US while the album was on top of the charts in both countries, making Stewart the first artist to do so.

'Mandolin Wind' was written by Stewart. Lindsay Raymond Jackson was originally credited as "the mandolin player in Lindisfarne" since Rod had forgotten his name.
