the house of love

The House of Love found a place for themselves on the burgeoning alternative scene with this shimmering melodic creation. The band was formed by Guy Chadwick after seeing a live performance by The Jesus and Mary Chain: "the idea of the sound of the group and what kind of musicians to look for... female vocals... a good take on the Velvets' sonics... and of course the image." He teamed up with his friend drummer Pete Evans and them put an ad in Melody Maker to assemble the rest of the original lineup: London guitarist Terry Bickers, German rhythm guitarist/co-singer Andrea Heukamp, and New Zealand bass player Chris Groothuizen. The band's name was inspired by 'A Spy in the House of Love' by Anais Nin.

They got a deal with Creation Records and released two singles "Shine On"  and "Real Animal" which failed to chart; but, after a critically acclaimed live performance, they were able to record a third single before Heukamp left the group. An untitled compilation of their singles and b-sides was released only in Germany.


They carried on as a quartet and produced their untitled debut album for Creation Records in just over a week; but due to disagreements within the band, Pat Collier was brought in to oversee the final mix. 'The House of Love' was a critical success; but the band remained a cult favorite.

"Christine" 
was the only song on the album that featured Heukamp. It charted at number eight on the US modern rock chart and number one on the British independent charts.

"Destroy the Heart" brushed its way to number seventy-six on the UK singles chart.  It was added to some versions of the album.
