everywhere at once

The Plimsouls came closer to success than a million miles away with the gritty underground power pop of this cult classic; but it was not close enough to keep them from falling apart.  Lead singer Peter Case had formed proto-punk outfit the Nerves with Paul Collins and Jack Lee before moving on to create the Plimsouls with guitarist Eddie Muñoz, bassist Dave Pahoa, and drummer Louie Ramírez.  They rose in the Los Angeles club scene and released the 'Zero Hour' EP on Beat Records and then a full length eponymous album on Planet Records before signing to major label Geffen Records.

'Everywhere At Once' was produced by Jeff Eyrich with Peter Case on vocals, guitar, 12-string guitar, and harmonica; Dave Pahoa on vocals, bass guitar, and background vocals; Louie Ramirez on drums, castanets, maracas, tambourine, and background vocals; and Eddie Muñoz on guitar and background vocals; with  Jeff Eyrich on vocals, guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, and background vocals; Steve Hunter on acoustic guitar; Doug Richardson on saxophone; Scott Wilk on organ; Brendon Matheson on tom tom; and David Williams, Andrew Williams, William Norwood, and Phast Phreddie on vocals and background vocals.  The album only made it to number one hundred and eighty six on the US album chart.  Later that year, the Plimsouls appeared in the iconic film 'Valley Girl' performing 'A Million Miles Away' and 'Everywhere At Once' in a seedy L.A. club.  The exposure got them some airplay; but their dismal album sales led to their eventual breakup.

Case remembers:   "That movie wasn't very big when it came out, and it didn't become the classic that it is now for a number of years.  We were more focused on our own albums and what we were trying to achieve...The Plimsouls were influenced by The Who.  They used to say they played maximum R&B, so we felt like we played maximum rock 'n' roll — the best blend of rock 'n' roll and pop music. The soul and blues and rock side of the Beatles and the Stones were influences, too...It was a real exciting scene, and all the bands were good.  They were all completely different, and they were all friends, like The Blasters, X, The Go-Go's ... these were all the top bands in L.A. We thought we were going to break through...We thought we had the goods to get on radio.  We were up against a lot of different things. It's possible that the band was a bit misunderstood by people who'd never experienced us live."

'A Million Miles Away' was originally released independently by the band before they signed to Geffen.  The song peaked at number eighty-two.

Friday night, I'd just got back
I had my eyes shut and dreaming about the past
I thought about you while the radio played
I should have got loaded, some reason I stayed
I started drifting to a different place
I realized I was falling off the face of the world
And there was nothing left to bring me back
I'm a million miles away
A million miles away
I'm just a million miles away
And there's nothing left to bring me back today
Took a ride, I went downtown
The streets were empty, there was no one around
To place that we used to know
Been all the places that we used to go
I'm at the wrong end of your looking glass
Just trying to hold on to the hands of the past and you
And there was nothing left to bring me back
I was a million miles away
A million miles away
I'm just a million miles away
And there's nothing to bring me back today
Bring me back today, bring me back today
I started drifting to a different place
I realized, falling off the face of the world
And there was nothing left to bring me back
I was a million miles away
I'm a million miles away
I'm a million miles away
And there's nothing left to bring me back today
Bring me back today, bring me back today
Bring me back today

"Everywhere at Once"

The band began to play
So we started running
From across the way
You could hear the drumming
Thunder struck a chord up in the sky
Lightning flashed, I looked you right in the eye
You’re the one I want
The rain started falling
So we took a chance
While the music was calling
I ran out of the way
You can hear the nightbells toll
Under the bridge
Where the river rolls
Everywhere at once
We’ll throw it wide open
And you can’t look back
Till the chains have been broken
Thunder struck a chord up in the sky
Lightning flashed, I looked you right in the eye
Whoa-oa-oa-oa
Everywhere at once
The rain kept on falling
So we took a chance
While the music was calling
I ran out of the way
You can hear the nightbells toll
Under the bridge
Where the river rolls
Everywhere at once
We’ll throw it wide open
And you can’t look back
Till the chains have been broken
Everywhere at once
Everywhere at once
Everywhere at once
Everywhere at once
