stories from the city, stories from the sea

pj harvey sold over a million copies worldwide of
stories from the city, stories from the sea.

it is her most balanced and accessible album: direct, vulnerable, and even happy. she sounds fitful, but fulfilled, as if she's found her bliss; but doesn't quite trust it. in a dream she pulls herself clear but in reality she collides with a kamikaze interspace that leaves her wounded and looking for safety and something to believe.

alternating between quiet, pastoral sensuality and raucous uninhibited passion; between a place called home and this mess we're in; it walks the streets in a crazy world and learns to take life as it comes.

she says "i wanted everything to sound as beautiful as possible. having experimented with some dreadful sounds on is this desire? and to bring you my love where i was really looking for dark, unsettling, nauseous-making sounds - stories from the city... was the reaction. i thought, no, i want absolute beauty. i want this album to sing and fly and be full of reverb and lush layers of melody. i want it to be my beautiful, sumptuous, lovely piece of work."

it is.

"Good Fortune"

"so i take my good fortune and i fantasize of our leaving like some modern-day gypsy landslide"

"even in the summer, even in the spring
you can never get too much of a wonderful thing"

"Big Exit"

"i walk on concrete
i walk on sand
but i can't find
a safe place to stand"

"This Mess We're In" (featuring Thom Yorke)

"the city sun set over me"

"One Line"

"and i draw a line
to your heart today
'to your heart from mine
and pray to keep us safe'."

"We Float"

"this is kind of about you
this is kind of about me
we just kind of lost our way
we were looking to be free
but one day
we'll float
take life as it comes..."
