caldonia

Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five had a rocking and rolling hit with this hilarious hard headed jump blues boogie.  Jordan had already had four number one singles on the Billboard Harlem Hit Parade  ( "What's the Use of Getting Sober (When You Gonna Get Drunk Again)", "Ration Blues", "G.I. Jive", and "Mop! Mop!" ) when he recorded this rave up on January 19, 1945 for Decca Records with producer Milt Gabler.   Jordan credited the song to his wife at the time, childhood sweetheart Fleecie Moore in an effort to get around his publishing deal; but it would backfire.  Their marriage was short lived (she was the second of what would be five wives) and tempestuous; with Moore allegedly stabbing Jordan on more than one occasion.  "Caldonia" spent seven weeks at the top of the Harlem Hit Parade and as "Caldonia Boogie" reached number six on the US pop chart.  'King of the Jukebox' Jordan would later relate:   "Fleecie Moore's name is on it, but she didn't have anything to do with it. That was my wife at the time, and we put it in her name. She didn't know nothin' about no music at all. Her name is on this song and that song, and she's still getting money."

Shes long, lean, and lanky and ain't had nothing to eat
Shes my baby and I love her just the same
Crazy 'bout that woman 'cause Caldonia is her name

You know what mama told me? Mama said son...
Keep away from that woman - she's gonna take all your money
Hey, hey, hey boy.... Don't laugh about my mama - you hear that?

Erskine Hawkins also did a version in 1945 that Billboard magazine described as "right rhythmic rock and roll music", the first time "rock and roll" was used in print to describe any style of music.

it's been a long, long time

In 1945, as the troops were coming home after the Second World War, this song was being requested and played so often that multiple versions worked their way up the charts. Composers Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn must have cleaned up as competing versions of their song were receiving massive airplay. Harry James and His Orchestra took it to number one in early December; but it was knocked out of the top spot by Bing Crosby accompanied by Les Paul and his Trio performing the same song! The Harry James version took the top spot again later that same month. Charlie Spivak and Stan Kenton also released versions of the song that year that charted in the top five.

Kiss me once, then kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time
Haven't felt like this, my dear
Since I can't remember when
It's been a long, long time

You'll never know how many dreams
I've dreamed about you
Or just how empty they all seemed without you
So kiss me once, then kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time

Ah, kiss me once, then kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long time
Haven't felt like this my dear
Since I can't remember when
It's been a long, long time

You'll never know how many dreams
I dreamed about you
Or just how empty they all seemed without you
So kiss me once then kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time
Long, long time

The version sung by Kitty Kallen with Harry James on trumpet starts with this extra verse:

Never thought that you would be
Standing here so close to me
There's so much I feel that I should say
But words can wait until some holiday

tears à la godley

kevin michael godley,
born 7 October 1945

with longtime music and video collaborator lol cream, he has produced some memorable and innovative work over the years. these two songs have both been favorites of mine since i first heard them. they're sad and they're sweet and i knew them complete. you should too.

twenty five years ago godley and cream released this groundbreaking video for 'cry' which features an analog cross fading technique to melt different faces into one another. it was a top twenty hit on both sides of the atlantic.

"you don't know how to ease my pain."

thirty five years ago 10cc were all over the radio with this synthesized lush denial. during the sessions for 'the original sountrack', godley and cream didn't like the original bossa nova direction the song was taking and scrapped it; but when staff at the studio were overheard singing "i'm not in love", they knew they had to try again. they multi-tracked vocal overdubs to produce the effect of a two hundred and fifty six voice choir. a number one hit in the u.k., in the states it lingered at the number two spot for three weeks (kept out by three different songs: 'the hustle', 'one of these nights', and 'jive talkin').

"big boys don't cry."

slave to love

bryan ferry
born 26 september 1945

the suave and sophisticated crooner captured my attention with this lush groove from his album boys and girls twenty five years ago. i quickly went back through his back catalogue with roxy music, which made this album pale in comparison. still, this seductive samba still captures the imagination.

tell her i'll be waiting in the usual place
with the tired and weary and there's no escape
to need a woman you've got to know
how the strong get weak and the rich get poor

slave to love
slave to love

you're running with me
don't touch the ground.
we're the restless hearted
not the chained and bound
the sky is burning
a sea of flame
though your world is changing I will be the same

slave to love
slave to love
slave to love
slave to love

no
i can't escape
i'm a slave to love
can you help me?

the storm is breaking or so it seems
we're too young to reason to grown up to dream
now spring is turning your face to mine
i can hear your laughter
i can see your smile

slave to love
slave to love
slave to love
slave to love
slave to love
no
i can't escape
i'm a slave to love
slave to love
no
i can't escape
i'm a slave to love
