frank sinatra

Francis Albert Sinatra
(December 12, 1915 – May 14, 1998)

Ol' Blue Eyes, The Voice, The Sultan of Swoon, The Chairman of the Board.  Sinatra became one of the greatest performers  of the twentieth century with his attitude and honesty, reinventing songs from the theatre  for larger audiences; and breaking into film and television with equal aplomb.

He was born in Hoboken, New Jersey where he would often as a child sing for change at his parents' prohibition tavern.  He never learned to read music; but his vocal range more than made up for that. He was able to join vocal group The Three Flashes, who, as the Hoboken Four, won a contest on Major Bowes' Original Amateur Hour, leading to a six month contract to perform all over the country.  A job as a singing waiter at "The Rustic Cabin" in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey got him on WNEW radio's Dance Parade.  It was this radio program that bandleader Harry James heard Sinatra and gave him his opening foray into recording.  Sinatra stuck with James for several years; but moved on to Tommy Dorsey's band in 1939.  As he saw greater and greater success, the singer decided that he was ready for a solo career; but had to fight to get out of his contract with Dorsey; which was allegedly done with help from his mob connections.  When he made his solo debut in December of 1942, his appeal to teenage girls led to a phenomenon called "Sinatramania".  He signed with Columbia Records and began a run of highly successful singles and shows. Sinatra was not eligible for military service during the war due to a perforated eardrum; but was able to perform for the troops on overseas USO tours and through the Armed Forces Radio Service.

As his career began to decline in the wake of the death of publicist George Evans and his divorce from Nancy Barbato, he started performing in Las Vegas, where dwindling crowds came to see him.  In 1952, Columbia dropped him due to poor sales.  His new wife Ava Gardner helped him to secure a role in director Fred Zinneman's film 'From Here to Eternity', which led to an Academy Award for Sinatra and revived his career.   In 1953, he signed a seven year deal with Capitol Records and began recording in earnest, releasing a series of groundbreaking albums with arranger/conductor Nelson Riddle.  Before his contract was finished, Sinatra began recording for his own Reprise Records in 1961, releasing six albums that year (three with Reprise and three with Capitol).  He continued to release albums through the next decade, going into retirement in 1970; but returning three years later.  He continued to tour and sporadically released albums until his final retirement in 1995.  He died from a heart attack within three years.

Sinatra in 1963:  "I get an audience involved, personally involved in a song—because I’m involved myself. It’s not something I do deliberately: I can’t help myself. If the song is a lament at the loss of love, I get an ache in my gut. I feel the loss myself and I cry out the loneliness, the hurt and the pain that I feel...I don’t know what other singers feel when they articulate lyrics, but being an 18-karat manic-depressive and having lived a life of violent emotional contradictions, I have an overacute capacity for sadness as well as elation. I know what the cat who wrote the song is trying to say. I’ve been there—and back. I guess the audience feels it along with me. They can’t help it. Sentimentality, after all, is an emotion common to all humanity...Most of what has been written about me is one big blur, but I do remember being described in one simple word that I agree with. It was in a piece that tore me apart for my personal behavior, but the writer said that when the music began and I started to sing, I was “honest.” That says it as I feel it. Whatever else has been said about me personally is unimportant. When I sing, I believe. I’m honest. If you want to get an audience with you, there’s only one way. You have to reach out to them with total honesty and humility. This isn’t a grandstand play on my part; I’ve discovered—and you can see it in other entertainers—when they don’t reach out to the audience, nothing happens. You can be the most artistically perfect performer in the world, but an audience is like a broad—if you’re indifferent, endsville. That goes for any kind of human contact: a politician on television, an actor in the movies, or a guy and a gal. That’s as true in life as it is in art."

Sinatra has  sold more than 150 million records worldwide, won eleven Grammys, three Academy Awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
