dookie

Green Day hit the majors and exploded into the mainstream with the DIY revivalism of this sensitive and sarcastic scatological slacker statement.  The underground success of their first two albums on Lookout! Records ('1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours' and 'Kerplunk'caught the attention of executives at several record companies.  They signed with Reprise after meeting producer Rob Cavallo who had heard something special in their demo tape.  They recorded 'Dookie' in three weeks at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California with Billie Joe Armstrong on lead vocals and guitar; Mike Dirnt on bass and backing vocals; and Tré Cool pm drums, guitar, and lead vocals on "All by Myself".

The alienation and angst of 'Dookie' was embraced by the disinfranchised youth and became a worldwide smash hit, spearheading a new punk movement in the 90's.  The album hit thirteen in Belgium and the UK; five in Finland; three in Sweden; two in the US; and number one in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.  It has sold over sixteen million copies worldwide.

'Basket Case'
Armstrong remembers:    "The lyrics kept changing.  It started out as a relationship song, and I got the idea for it to be more neurotic and a panic-attack song, and it seemed to hit home. And I didn't even expect the song to even be a single. It seemed like it was a difficult song to play. Then it got released, and I guess I was wrong about that."       The single charted at thirty-five in France, twenty-one in New Zealand, twelve in Canada, nine on the US mainstream rock tracks chart, seven in the UK, three in Sweden, and number one on the US alternative chart.
