louis and the good book

Louis Armstrong looked up for help and found himself in a sweet spot with the playful prayers of these swinging spirituals.  Unlike his album 'Louis and the Angels' from the previous year, 'Louis and the Good Book' fully embraces gospel music rather than just hint at it.  The album was recorded with the Sy Oliver Choir and The All Stars featuring Louis Armstrong on trumpet and vocal, Trummy Young on trombone, Dave McRae on clarinet, Billy Kyle on piano, George Barnes on guitar, Mort Herbert on bass, Barrett Deems on drums, Nickie Tagg on organ,  with Everett Barksdale playing some guitar, and Edmond Hall and Hank D'Amico playing some clarinet. 

Armstrong would confess:  "I'm a Baptist and a good friend of the Pope's and I always wear a Jewish star a friend gave me for luck ... You’ve got to be good...or bad as the devil.”
