no more shall we part

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds sought healing in this dark and beautiful musical drama that is a personal reflection of chaos and contemplation, heartbroken resignation, and redemptive rehabilitation. Guitarist Mick Harvey and Violinist Warren Ellis create arrangements that expand the scope of the songs to bring in a sense of the psychological and the spiritual stuggles that show in elemental forms. Kate and Anna McGarrigle provide affecting backing vocals and Cave takes his voice to new places. The music goes from soft and soothing to griping and stirring, sometimes changing with no warning into a crescendo of sonic force that takes the eastern instrumentation of gypsy music and infuses it with cinematic orchestral grace.

'As I Sat Sadly By Her Side'

"God has given you but one heart
You are not a home for the hearts of your brothers
And God does not care for your benevolence
Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others
Nor does he care for you to sit
At windows in judgment of the world He created
While sorrows pile up around you
Ugly, useless and over inflated"

'And No More Shall We Part'

"Lord, stay by me
Don't go down
I will never be free
If I'm not free now"

'Love Letter'

"Said something I did not mean to say
It all came out the wrong way"

'Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow'

"Is anybody out there, please?
It's too quiet and I'm beginning to freeze
I've got icicles hanging from my knees"

'God Is In The House'

"And at night we're on our knees
As quiet as a mouse
Since the word got out
From the north down to the south
For no-one's left in doubt
There's no fear about
If we all hold hands and very quietly shout
Hallelujah"

'Oh My Lord'

"How have I offended thee?
Wrap your tender arms round me"
