Drive-By Truckers got real with the visceral vignettes and distorted despair of this conceptual country rock comeuppance. 'The Dirty South' completes a trilogy of albums exploring the mythology of the Southland that began with 'Southern Rock Opera' and continued with 'Decoration Day'.
'The Dirty South' was recorded at Chase Park Transduction in Athens,, GA and The Legendary Fame Recording Studio in Muscle Shoals, AL on sixteen-track / two-inch analog and features Mike Cooley on lead vocals, backing vocals, guitars, banjo, and harmonica; Patterson Hood on lead vocals, backing vocals, guitars, and piano; Jason Isbell on lead vocals, backing vocals, guitars, piano, 12 string electric Hagstrom guitar, mellophones, Fender Rhodes electric piano, Wurlitzer electric piano, and B3 organ; Brad Morgan on drums and percussion; and Shonna Tucker on bass and backing vocals; with The Reverend David Barbe on production, direction, recording, piano, Fender Rhodes, B3 organ, and backing vocals; Clay Leverett on backing vocals; The Minor Hill Singers (Jason Isbell, Kimberly Morgan and Shonna Tucker) on backing vocals; and The State Line Chain Gang on percussive auto parts.
'The Dirty South' went to number one hundred and forty-seven on the Billboard 200, fourteen on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart, and number five on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart.
