John Coltrane made a lasting impression with this diverse collection live and studio tracks.  One of seven albums Coltrane released in 1963, 'Impressions' takes two extended performances from his stint at the Village Vanguard that did not make it onto 'Live at the Village Vanguard' and breaks them up with shorter songs recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs.  The John Coltrane Quartet (John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones) plays on all of the selections, with Eric Dolphy and Reggie Workman joining in on the live recordings.  'Impressions' was produced by Bob Thiele with recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder and credits John Coltrane on soprano sax and tenor sax; Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet and alto sax; McCoy Tyner on piano; Jimmy Garrison and Reggie Workman on double bass; and Elvin Jones and Roy Haynes on drums.  The live performances captured on 'Impressions' are fiery and intense, while the studio tracks have a more restrained feel.
