rage against the machine
Rage Against the Machine exploded into the public consciousness with the revolutionary rock of this influential fusion of hardcore, hip-hop, metal, and reggae. The band formed in Los Angeles out of the ashes of local bands Lock Up, Greta, and Inside Out. Their intense sound and their outspoken opposition of cultural imperialism and the politics of greed got a lot of attention. After getting a record deal with Epic Records, they co-produced their eponymous debut album with Garth Richardson at Sound City in Van Nuys, CA; Scream Studios in Studio City, CA; and Industrial Recording in North Hollywood, CA. The sessions included Zack de la Rocha on vocals, Tim Commerford on bass guitar and backing vocals, Brad Wilk on drums and percussion, and Tom Morello on guitars. Tool's Maynard James Keenan provided additional vocals and Jane's Addiction's Stephen Perkins contributed additional percussion with his trashcan.
The album cover features a photo taken by Malcolm Browne of Thích Quảng Đức, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, burning himself to death in Saigon in 1963 in protest of President Ngô Đình Diệm's oppression of the Buddhist religion. 'Rage Against the Machine' went to number forty-five in the US, in the UK, and number one on the US heatseekers album chart. The combination of guitar pyrotechnics and politically charged lyrics influenced a whole generation.
